Why updating your smartwatch software is critical for security and performance

Your smartwatch is an incredible piece of technology. It tracks your steps, monitors your sleep, receives your text messages, and even lets you pay for coffee with a flick of the wrist. But because it handles so much personal and financial data, it’s not just a gadget—it’s a tiny, powerful computer that needs constant security maintenance.

If you tend to ignore those “Software Update Available” notifications that pop up on your wrist or phone, you are leaving a critical security door wide open. You need to stop viewing software updates as annoying chores and start seeing them as essential security armor.

The Hidden Risk on Your Wrist

Smartwatches are essentially extensions of your smartphone, meaning they are connected to your Wi-Fi, linked to your banking apps, and contain your most sensitive biometric data (heart rate, movement patterns, etc.).

When a manufacturer releases a software update for your Apple Watch, Samsung Galaxy Watch, or Fitbit, they aren’t usually adding a new, flashy feature. Most of the time, they are urgently patching vulnerabilities—security holes that hackers have either discovered or are actively exploiting.

If you postpone those updates:

  • You’re an Easy Target: You are permanently stuck with known security flaws. Hackers publish lists of vulnerabilities in older software versions, making devices running them a low-hanging and highly attractive target.
  • Your Data is Exposed: A compromised smartwatch can be used as a gateway to your smartphone, allowing criminals to steal credentials, read messages, or even initiate unauthorized payments.
  • Failed Authentication: Your watch relies on continuous, up-to-date security protocols to securely transmit payment information when you use services like Apple Pay or Google Pay. Outdated software can create weaknesses in that encryption chain.

Your Active Solution: Update Immediately

Make updating your smartwatch software a non-negotiable part of your weekly digital routine. You need to actively ensure you are running the latest version.

How to Stay Protected:

  1. Enable Automatic Updates: Check your companion app (Apple Watch app, Galaxy Wearable app, etc.) settings and ensure that automatic updates are toggled on. This lets your phone handle the heavy lifting, usually while you sleep or charge the device.
  2. Verify the Update: If your device can’t update automatically, you must manually trigger the process. You usually do this through the watch’s companion app on your phone:
    1. For Apple Watch: Open the Watch App > General > Software Update.
    1. For Android/Galaxy Watch: Open the Wearable App > Watch settings > Watch software update.
  3. Charge Before You Start: Most updates require your watch to be connected to its charger and have a significant battery percentage (often 50% or more). Don’t wait until the battery is dead; actively plug it in when you see the notification.

Don’t let that small notification turn into a huge security breach. Take control of your wearable tech and ensure that your security is always up-to-the-minute.
