How to review and manage app permissions on your iPhone

Your iPhone holds some of the most personal information in your life—your photos, contacts, location, messages, and financial data. Every app you install has the potential to access some of that information, which is why reviewing your app permissions regularly is one of the smartest things you can do for your digital privacy.

Why do iPhone app permissions matter?

When you download an app, it often requests access to features like your camera, microphone, location, contacts, or photo library. Sometimes those requests make sense—a video calling app obviously needs your camera. But other times, apps ask for far more access than they actually need, quietly collecting data in the background that you never agreed to share.

The scale of this tracking is eye-opening. According to Adjust’s Q2 2025 ATT benchmarks, only about 35% of iPhone users opt in when an app asks permission to track their activity across other apps and websites—meaning the majority of users actively choose to block tracking when given the choice. That tells you something important: most people don’t want apps following them around, and Apple gives you the tools to stop it.

How to review permissions by category

This method shows you every app that has access to a specific feature all in one place:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Privacy & Security
  3. Tap a category—such as Location Services, Camera, Microphone, Contacts, or Photos
  4. Review the list of apps that have requested access
  5. Toggle the switch off for any app that doesn’t need it

This is the fastest way to spot apps that have access they shouldn’t.

How to review permissions for a single app

If you want to see everything a specific app can access:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Scroll down and tap the app name
  3. Review all listed permissions—camera, microphone, location, photos, and more
  4. Adjust each permission as needed

Use Apple’s App Privacy Report

Apple includes a powerful built-in audit tool most people don’t know about:

  • Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report
  • This shows you how often apps are actually using the permissions you’ve granted, plus their network activity
  • It’s a great way to catch apps that are quietly accessing your data in the background when you’re not even using them

Smart permission settings for iPhone users

Fine-tune these key permissions for better privacy:

  • Location: Choose “While Using the App” instead of “Always” whenever possible. Very few apps genuinely need your location 24/7.
  • Photos: Select “Selected Photos” instead of granting full library access. This limits apps to only the images you specifically choose.
  • App Tracking Transparency: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking and make sure “Allow Apps to Request to Track” is set the way you want. You can also deny all future tracking requests with a single toggle.
  • Microphone and Camera: Deny access for any app that doesn’t have an obvious reason to use them. Watch for the orange and green indicator dots at the top of your screen—they tell you when an app is actively using your mic or camera.

Your iPhone gives you more control over app permissions than most people realize. Take five minutes to review your Privacy & Security settings, turn off access that doesn’t make sense, and check your App Privacy Report regularly. It’s one of the easiest ways to take back control of your personal data—no tech expertise required.
