Divvy up your online presence by compartmentalizing accounts

Don’t use the same email address to sign up for multiple accounts. If that email is compromised, so are all the accounts connected to it. Assign a different email address with a unique password to every type of action you take on the internet (i.e. social media, work, e-commerce, etc.)

Tightly monitor your password recovery email account

It’s common to forget a password, you’ll usually reset it by having a link sent to an on-file email address. It’s important that account is secured with multi-factor authentication, allows for global sign-out just in case someone else accesses it and doesn’t have any unusual forwarding filters set up.

Use email encryption if you send sensitive data

Most people think email is comparatively safe, but it’s an old set of protocols with many weaknesses. Think about using encrypted email for full protection – messages sent through these services are utterly unreadable by anyone without your key, although using it may take some getting used to.

Double-check your email attachments

Email attachments can be dangerous. They might contain malware that causes an infection when downloaded. Even if you get an attachment from someone you know, think about it before opening it and, if you’re unsure if it’s genuine, follow up with that person separately.
