A password hint may seem harmless: a short clue that helps you remember a login. But a hint displayed on a sign-in screen can also help someone else guess it. If the clue points to your pet, birthday, hometown, school or favorite team, a criminal may find the answer in your social posts, public records or information exposed in a breach.

Personal clues are still common in account security. CISA cites research showing that 35% of participants use personal details such as pet names or family members in passwords. The same habit makes password hints and security-question answers predictable. The safest approach is simple: avoid hints when possible and use recovery methods that do not depend on facts other people can discover.

What is a password hint?

A password hint is text you create to remind yourself of a password. Some devices or older services may display it after failed sign-in attempts. A hint is not necessarily secret, so treat it as information that an attacker could see.

A hint such as “first dog plus birth year” reveals both the source and structure of a password. Even a vague clue can reduce the number of guesses an attacker must try. If the service requires a hint, never write the password, a close variation, its pattern or the personal story behind it.

Why is personal information dangerous in password hints?

Attackers do not have to know you personally. They can collect names, photos, celebrations, schools, workplaces, relatives and interests from social media. Data brokers, public records and breached databases can fill in more details. Criminals then combine those clues to guess login credentials or answer account-recovery questions.

CISA warns that identifying information such as birthdays and pet names is unsafe for protecting important accounts. That advice applies equally to hints: if a fact is memorable because it is part of your life, it may also be searchable or guessable.

Which password hints should you never use?

• Names: Avoid pets, children, partners, relatives, teachers and childhood friends.
• Dates: Do not use birthdays, anniversaries, graduations or the year you moved.
• Places: Skip hometowns, schools, streets, vacation spots and favorite restaurants.
• Interests: Avoid teams, musicians, movies, books, cars and hobbies visible online.
• Password structure: Never reveal where capitals, symbols, numbers or extra words appear.
• Recovery details: Do not expose an email address, phone number or security-question answer.

What should you use instead of password hints?

Use a reputable password manager to generate, store and fill a different long password for every account. Then you do not need clues that reveal how a password was built. The FTC recommends long passwords or random passphrases and suggests a reputable password manager when you need help creating and remembering them.

Protect the password manager with a unique master passphrase and multifactor authentication. Store recovery codes in a secure location separate from the device you normally use. When a service supports passkeys, consider adopting them; passkeys remove the need to remember a conventional password and resist many phishing attacks.

How can you remove risky hints and recovery answers?

1. Start with your email. It controls password resets for many other accounts, so review it first.
2. Open security settings. Look for Password, Sign-in, Recovery, Security questions or Password hint.
3. Delete the hint if allowed. If the field is required, use a reminder that reveals nothing about the password. Never reuse the hint as a secret answer.
4. Replace personal security answers. Use unique random responses stored in your password manager, as long as the service accepts them.
5. Verify recovery channels. Remove old phone numbers and email addresses, then protect the current recovery account.
6. Turn on stronger MFA. Prefer a passkey, security key or authenticator app when available.
7. Save recovery codes safely. Keep them offline or in a protected vault—not in the same inbox the codes recover.

What if a website requires a password hint?

Create a neutral reminder that does not disclose the password, its ingredients or your personal history. Better yet, save the credential in your password manager and make the hint meaningless to anyone viewing it. If a service publicly displays hints and offers weak recovery options, limit the information stored in that account and consider whether you need the service.

What should you do if a hint may have exposed your password?

Change the password immediately from the service’s official app or website. Make the replacement long, random and unique, and change any other account where you reused the old password. Review recent sign-ins, sign out unfamiliar sessions and confirm that recovery details have not changed.

Enable MFA and watch for reset messages or login alerts. Protect your email first because an attacker who controls your inbox may be able to reset other accounts. The FTC recommends strong passwords and two-factor authentication to protect online accounts; choose an authenticator app, security key or passkey when the service offers one.

Removing personal hints denies attackers a shortcut.

They cannot use your public posts or breached profile details to narrow their guesses, reconstruct a password pattern or complete a weak recovery challenge. Moving credentials into a password manager also gives every account a separate, random password, so one compromise is less likely to spread.

No single setting guarantees safety. Pair hint removal with unique passwords, MFA, current recovery details and less public sharing of birthdays, family names and other identifying facts. Together, those habits make both login guessing and account recovery abuse harder.
