Working from a coffee shop, airport, park, hotel lobby, or coworking space can be convenient. But a laptop screen in public can expose private emails, customer information, passwords, account numbers, and confidential documents to anyone nearby.

Whenever you stop working, even briefly, lock the screen and close the laptop. If you need to leave your seat, take the computer with you.

Why should you close your laptop in public?

An open laptop creates two immediate security risks: someone can read the screen, or someone can physically access the device.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency recommends locking your device whenever you step away, even if you will be gone for only a few minutes. CISA warns that physical access could let someone copy files, install spyware, access private data, or steal the computer entirely.

An unlocked screen may expose:

• Email and private messages
• Customer or workplace documents
• Banking and payment information
• Password-manager entries
• Account recovery codes
• Medical or insurance records
• Travel plans and home addresses
• Notifications visible on the desktop

Closing the lid usually puts a laptop to sleep, but settings vary. Confirm that closing the lid also requires authentication when the computer wakes.

Is closing the laptop enough?

Not always. If the laptop does not lock when the lid closes, someone may reopen it and access the active session.

Use the device’s lock command first:

• Windows: Press Windows key + L
• Mac: Press Control + Command + Q
• Chromebook: Press Search + L or Launcher + L

Then close the lid. Configure your system to require a password, PIN, fingerprint, or face scan immediately after sleep.

What is shoulder surfing?

Shoulder surfing occurs when someone watches your screen or keyboard to collect sensitive information. The observer does not need to touch the laptop. A nearby person may see a password, confidential email, payment card, or private document with one glance.

CISA specifically warns that someone looking over your shoulder in a coffee shop or airport may see passwords, data, and other sensitive activity without gaining physical access to the device.

Reduce visual exposure by:

• Sitting with your back toward a wall
• Positioning the screen away from foot traffic
• Lowering the screen brightness
• Using a removable privacy filter
• Hiding sensitive notification previews
• Avoiding confidential work in crowded areas
• Checking behind you before entering a password

Should you leave a locked laptop at the table?

No. A locked screen protects access, but it does not prevent theft.

The FTC’s guidance on protecting laptops from theft recommends treating a laptop like cash and keeping it under close supervision in coffee shops, hotels, airports, and other public places.

If you need a refill or restroom break:

1. Save your work.
2. Lock the screen.
3. Close the lid.
4. Place the laptop in your bag.
5. Take the bag with you.

Do not ask a stranger to “watch it for a minute.” A cable lock may deter opportunistic theft, but it does not replace keeping the device with you.

How should you configure automatic locking?

Automatic locking protects you if you forget to lock the screen manually.

Use a short idle timeout, particularly when traveling or working in public. CISA recommends configuring a device to lock automatically after no more than 15 minutes of inactivity, but a shorter interval such as one to five minutes offers stronger protection in a public setting.

Also enable:

• A strong password or PIN
• Biometric sign-in where available
• Full-disk encryption
• Device-location or recovery tools
• Automatic operating-system updates
• Encrypted backups
• Multifactor authentication for important accounts

Closing and locking your laptop creates a barrier between nearby people and your active digital session. It prevents casual observers from reading the screen and stops someone from immediately using your logged-in accounts.

Physical security and cybersecurity work together. Strong passwords cannot protect an account if you leave that account open on an unattended computer.

Before working in a public place:

• Sit where others cannot easily view the screen.
• Use a privacy filter for sensitive work.
• Hide notification previews.
• Set a short automatic-lock timer.
• Require authentication immediately after sleep.
• Lock the screen before closing the lid.
• Take the laptop whenever you leave your seat.
• Keep full-disk encryption enabled.
• Avoid displaying highly sensitive information in public.
• Use your employer’s approved security practices for work data.

When you finish working or need to look away, lock the screen and close the laptop. When you leave the table, take it with you.
