Total Defense Security Tip of the Day

Should you use a prepaid card for safer online shopping?
Entering a debit card number on an unfamiliar shopping site can put more than one purchase at risk. If criminals steal that number, they may try to pull money directly from the checking account you use for bills, groceries and other essentials.
A prepaid card can create distance between an online store and your bank account. You load a limited amount before buying, then spend only the available balance. If the card details are stolen, the amount exposed may be limited to what remains on the card. That separation can reduce the immediate financial impact while you report the problem.
Payment fraud is not rare. The FBI says credit card fraud produced $282 million in reported losses in 2025, while non-payment and non-delivery scams caused more than $503 million in losses. A prepaid card cannot tell whether a store is legitimate, but it can add a useful layer of spending control when you shop online.
What is a prepaid card and how does it work?
A general-purpose reloadable prepaid card looks similar to a debit card, but it is not necessarily connected to your checking account. You add money to the card, use it where its payment network is accepted and reload it when needed. Some cards offer an app, transaction alerts, virtual numbers or a way to lock the card.
Do not confuse a reloadable prepaid card with a retailer gift card. Gift cards may work only at one business and often provide different protections. Scammers also demand gift cards as payment because the money can be difficult to recover. Never buy any prepaid or gift card because a caller tells you to pay a tax, fine, debt, tech-support bill or emergency.
Does a prepaid card make online shopping safer?
It can limit exposure, but it does not make the transaction risk-free. Loading only the purchase amount plus a small buffer means a thief cannot drain your primary bank balance through that card. A separate card number also keeps your everyday debit-card details away from more merchants.
However, prepaid cards have their own terms, fees and dispute rules. The FTC advises comparing how credit, debit and prepaid cards work, what they cost and what legal protections each provides. A credit card may still be the better choice for a costly purchase because federal billing-error and dispute protections can be stronger.
When does using a prepaid card make sense?
- Shopping at a new merchant: Limit the reusable payment information shared with a seller you have not tried before.
- Making a small one-time purchase: Load close to the total instead of exposing a card tied to a larger account balance.
- Managing a shopping budget: A fixed balance can help prevent impulse spending and subscription creep.
- Paying on a shared device: Use a separate card while still declining to save its number in the browser or account.
- Giving a household member spending access: Set a defined amount without handing over the card connected to your main checking account.
How do you choose and use a prepaid card safely?
- Compare the full cost. Check purchase, activation, monthly, reload, inactivity, ATM, replacement and foreign-transaction fees. The CFPB notes that prepaid cards have different terms and fees, so read the short and long-form disclosures before buying.
- Choose a reputable issuer. Confirm who issues the card, how to reach support and whether the funds may qualify for FDIC insurance.
- Register the card. Registration can unlock important loss, theft and error protections. The CFPB says registered prepaid cards may have federal protections for unauthorized transactions, but you must report problems promptly.
- Load only what you need. Add the purchase total, taxes and a small buffer. Avoid leaving a large balance on a card used with unfamiliar sellers.
- Turn on alerts. Enable notifications for every purchase, declined transaction, reload and profile change.
- Shop from a trusted path. Type the store address, use its official app or follow a saved bookmark—not an ad, text or unexpected email.
- Decline saved payment details. Do not let the merchant or a shared browser store the prepaid number.
- Keep records. Save the card number, issuer contact information, receipt and order confirmation in a secure place.
What are the limits of prepaid cards?
A prepaid card may be a poor fit for hotels, rental cars, gas pumps or subscriptions because merchants can place authorization holds that temporarily reduce the available balance. Refunds may also take time. Some cards charge enough fees to erase the benefit of using them for frequent purchases.
A low balance limits one type of loss, but it does not protect your name, address, email, password or device if you enter them on a phishing site. It also cannot recover an item a dishonest seller never ships. The FTC recommends researching online sellers, comparing total costs, keeping purchase records and paying by credit card when possible. Treat the prepaid card as one layer—not permission to ignore warning signs.
What should you do if a prepaid card is compromised?
- Lock the card in the issuer’s official app if that option is available.
- Call the number on the card or issuer’s verified website immediately.
- Report unauthorized transactions and ask about replacement and dispute procedures.
- Change the card-account password and any reused password.
- Review recent transactions, alerts and contact details for other changes.
- Preserve receipts, screenshots and messages related to the purchase.
The CFPB advises contacting the provider right away when a prepaid card or PIN is lost or stolen or when unauthorized charges appear. Waiting can increase your responsibility for losses, depending on the card and circumstances.
How prepaid cards can reduce your online shopping risk
A carefully chosen prepaid card separates a low-risk purchase from the bank account that supports your daily life. By loading only what you plan to spend, you can cap the immediately available balance, keep your primary debit-card number away from more merchants and spot unexpected transactions through dedicated alerts.
That protection works best with good shopping habits: verify the seller, use unique passwords, enable multifactor authentication, update your device and avoid links in unsolicited messages. For expensive purchases or unfamiliar merchants, compare the prepaid card’s protections with a credit card before deciding.
Before your next online order, take five minutes to review one prepaid option. Check its fees, register it, turn on alerts and load only the amount you need. A smaller exposed balance and a separate card number can make a stolen checkout credential far less disruptive.
