Report duplicate social media accounts before scammers target your network
Finding a second social media account that uses your name, photo, workplace, or personal details is more than an annoyance. A scammer may have cloned your profile to impersonate you, contact your friends, distribute malicious links, advertise fake jobs, or request money.
If you discover a duplicate account, document it and report it immediately. Fast action can stop an impersonator before the account gains credibility or causes financial and reputational damage.
What is a duplicate social media account?
A duplicate or cloned account is a new account built to resemble an existing profile. Unlike an account takeover, the original account may remain secure and fully accessible. The scammer simply copies information that is already visible.
An impersonator may copy your:
- Name and profile photo
- Employer and job title
- Biography and location
- Cover photo
- Public posts
- School history
- Friends or professional connections
- Business name, branding, or logo
Remember that two legitimate people can share the same name. Look for copied photos, biographical details, work history, posts, or deceptive messages before deciding that an account is fraudulent.
Why do scammers create duplicate profiles?
A copied profile gives a scammer instant credibility. People are more likely to trust a message that appears to come from a friend, relative, coworker, manager, recruiter, or familiar business.
Scammers may use duplicate accounts to:
- Send malicious links
- Request emergency payments
- Promote fake investments
- Advertise nonexistent jobs
- Collect résumés and personal information
- Ask for passwords or verification codes
- Sell counterfeit products
- Target your contacts with phishing
- Damage your professional reputation
- Build trust before moving conversations off-platform
This problem can have a major financial impact. According to the FTC’s 2025 imposter-scam data, consumers reported losing $3.5 billion to imposter scams in 2025, and nearly one in three fraud reports involved an imposter scam.
How does reporting a duplicate account make someone safer online?
Reporting a fake account helps someone become safer online by removing a tool that criminals can use to manipulate personal and professional contacts.
Quick reporting can:
- Stop fraudulent messages from spreading
- Protect friends and relatives from payment scams
- Reduce malicious links sent in your name
- Prevent fake recruiter or job offers
- Limit reputational damage
- Protect customers and professional contacts
- Make the profile less likely to fool additional victims
- Help platforms identify connected scam accounts
The core safety principle is simple: A fake account becomes more dangerous the longer people believe it is real.
How can you identify a cloned account?
Check the suspicious account carefully without interacting with links or attachments.
Warning signs of impersonation
- The account uses familiar photos but has a slightly different username.
- You or your contact already have an established account.
- The profile was recently created.
- The account has few posts or connections.
- The biography contains copied or inconsistent details.
- Mutual contacts receive unexpected friend requests.
- Messages quickly ask for money or private information.
- The account promotes an unrealistic job, prize, or investment.
- The person asks to move the conversation to WhatsApp, Telegram, or text.
- The profile sends links without context.
LinkedIn’s guidance for identifying fake profiles lists duplicate profiles, unrealistic career timelines, suspicious requests for money or sensitive information, unusual photos, and pressure to move off-platform as potential warning signs.
What should you do before reporting the account?
Preserve evidence first. The profile may disappear, change usernames, or block you after the scammer realizes you have noticed it.
Save:
- Screenshots of the profile
- The full profile URL
- The username and display name
- Copied photos and posts
- Suspicious messages
- Requests for money or information
- Names of contacts who received messages
- Dates and times of suspicious activity
Do not send the fake account a warning. Confronting the scammer may encourage the person to delete evidence or create another profile.
How do you report a duplicate social media account?
The exact options vary by platform, but most reporting tools appear under the profile’s three-dot or “More” menu.
General reporting steps
- Open the duplicate profile.
- Select the three-dot or “More” menu.
- Choose Report, Find support, or Report/Block.
- Select Impersonation, Fake account, or Pretending to be someone.
- Identify whether the account is impersonating you, someone you know, or a business.
- Submit screenshots or identification if requested.
- Save the report number or confirmation message.
- Ask affected contacts to report the account independently.
On LinkedIn, the official fake-profile reporting instructions direct users to select More, choose Report/Block, report the entire account, and select either This person is impersonating someone or This account is not a real person. LinkedIn also says the reported account will not learn who submitted the report.
What else should you do after reporting?
Reporting is only the first step. Protect your real account and warn the people most likely to be targeted.
Impersonation response checklist
- Post a short warning from your real account.
- Tell close contacts not to accept new requests from the duplicate.
- Change your password if you notice unfamiliar account activity.
- Turn on multifactor authentication.
- Review active sessions and remove unknown devices.
- Limit who can view your friend or connection list.
- Hide your personal email address and phone number.
- Review which photos and details are publicly visible.
- Search your name periodically for additional copies.
- Report fraudulent payments to your bank immediately.
Do not include the fake profile’s clickable link in a public warning if doing so might drive more people toward the scam. A screenshot and exact username may provide enough context.
What should you say to your contacts?
Keep your warning direct:
A fake account is using my name and photo. Please do not accept requests, click links, send money, or share information with that account. Report and block the profile if it contacts you.
If the impersonator claims to offer jobs, add that legitimate hiring communication will come through your verified professional account or an official company email domain.
When should you involve law enforcement?
Contact local law enforcement if the impersonation includes:
- Credible physical threats
- Stalking or harassment
- Financial theft
- Extortion
- Identity theft
- Fraudulent business transactions
- Exposure of private identifying information
Save all messages, screenshots, usernames, URLs, payment records, and report confirmations before content disappears.
A duplicate social media account is not harmless flattery. It may be a tool for phishing, fraud, identity theft, or reputational damage. Document the profile, report it through the platform, warn your contacts, and strengthen the security of your real account.
