How to erase your Amazon browsing history and protect your shopping privacy
Amazon remembers the products you view so it can make online shopping faster and more personal. That can be helpful when you are comparing laptops or replacing a household item. It can also reveal interests, gifts, health concerns or major purchases to anyone who opens your account on a shared device.
Amazon’s current privacy notice says it automatically collects information about how customers interact with products, content and services, then uses personal information for recommendations and personalization. Cleaning up that record gives you more control over what appears in recently viewed items and product suggestions.
What does Amazon browsing history include?
Your Amazon browsing history is a list of products you recently viewed while signed in. Amazon uses those views to personalize recommendations. It is different from your order history, saved lists, shopping cart, browser history and advertising preferences.
That distinction matters. Deleting Amazon browsing history does not cancel orders, erase purchases or remove every signal Amazon may use to personalize your experience. It cleans one visible record and reduces the influence of unwanted product views.
Why should you clear Amazon browsing history?
Browsing history may expose more than a shopping list. A viewed product can suggest a medical concern, financial situation, hobby, upcoming trip or surprise gift. On a shared household account, those clues may appear in recommendations when someone else shops.
The privacy concern extends beyond one retailer. A 2024 Federal Trade Commission review examined the data practices of nine major social media and video-streaming services and warned about broad collection, retention and sharing of personal information. The report did not focus only on Amazon shopping history, but it offers a useful reminder: review the controls that major platforms provide instead of leaving personalization on autopilot.
How do you delete Amazon browsing history?
- Sign in through the official Amazon app or website. Avoid links in unexpected emails or texts.
- Open Your Browsing History. Look under your account, profile or personalized-content controls. Menu names may vary by device.
- Remove individual products. Select Remove from view below an item when you want to keep the rest of your history.
- Clear the complete list. Open the settings control and choose Remove all items from view. Amazon’s official help page confirms that you can remove items individually or clear the history completely.

Can you stop Amazon from saving future browsing activity?
Yes. Open Your Browsing History, choose the settings symbol, select More settings and turn Browsing History off. Amazon’s current instructions say this control turns browsing history on or off. Use it before researching a surprise gift or sensitive product on a shared account.
What else should you review after clearing the history?
- Recommendations: Remove products you do not want influencing suggestions.
- Advertising preferences: Review interest-based advertising choices in Amazon’s privacy controls.
- Saved lists and cart: Delete private items that remain visible to other account users.
- Browser data: Clear local browsing history on a shared device; Amazon’s account history and your browser history are separate.
- Account access: Use a unique password, enable two-step verification and sign out devices you do not recognize.
Does deleting Amazon history make you anonymous?
No. It does not erase orders, payment records, searches stored elsewhere, cookies or all information associated with your account. It also cannot protect an account that another person can open. Think of history cleanup as data minimization, not invisibility.
