Turn off your smartwatch always-on display to protect private notifications in public

Smartwatches make life easier, but they can also expose private information in plain sight. If your watch keeps the display visible all day, strangers nearby may catch a glimpse of text messages, calendar alerts, payment notifications, health reminders, or work updates before you notice.

That is why turning off your smartwatch’s always-on display is one of the simplest privacy wins you can make in under a minute.

Why should you turn off always-on display on a smartwatch?

Always-on display keeps your watch face visible even when your wrist is down. According to Apple’s guidance on the Always On feature, the screen can show the time, watch face details, Live Activities, notifications, or active apps while the display is dimmed.

That matters because your wrist often faces outward in public. Think about:

  • Standing in a checkout line
  • Holding a subway pole
  • Sitting in a meeting
  • Typing at a coffee shop
  • Walking through an airport
  • Riding in an elevator

Your phone may stay locked in your pocket, but your watch may still display enough information for someone nearby to learn who is messaging you, where you are going, or what app just alerted you.

What private information can appear on your smartwatch screen?

Your smartwatch may reveal more than you realize. Apple explains in its Apple Watch notification support article that notifications can appear on your Apple Watch when your iPhone is locked or asleep, depending on your settings.

Common exposed details include:

  • Text message previews
  • Two-factor authentication prompts
  • Calendar locations
  • Email subject lines
  • Banking or payment alerts
  • Delivery updates
  • Health and fitness reminders
  • Work chat notifications
  • Rideshare or travel alerts

Cybercriminals do not always need to hack you. Sometimes they just need to observe. Shoulder surfing, casual snooping, and social engineering often start with tiny clues.

How big is the risk?

Digital crime keeps growing, and personal information fuels many scams. The FBI’s 2024 Internet Crime Report announcement said the Internet Crime Complaint Center received 859,532 complaints in 2024, with reported losses exceeding $16 billion, a 33% increase from 2023.

Your smartwatch screen will not cause that entire problem, but exposed notifications can give scammers useful context. A visible bank alert, employer message, travel plan, or verification code can help someone craft a more convincing phishing attempt.

How to turn off always-on display

Use these steps as a quick privacy check.

On Apple Watch

Apple says users can manage Always On by opening the Settings app on Apple Watch, tapping Display & Brightness, selecting Always On, then turning the feature on or off in its Always On feature instructions.

For stronger privacy:

  • Turn off Always On
  • Review Show Notifications under Always On settings
  • Enable notification privacy where available
  • Turn off previews for sensitive apps
  • Use Theater Mode in crowded places

On Samsung Galaxy Watch

Samsung Galaxy Watch users can usually turn off always-on display from the watch settings by going to Settings > Display > Always-on display, and guides such as TechWiser’s Galaxy Watch always-on display walkthrough also note that some models include a Quick Panel shortcut or Galaxy Wearable app controls.

On Google Pixel Watch

Pixel Watch users can typically open watch settings, go to Display, then turn off Always-on screen. Google’s Pixel Watch community guidance references the setting path Settings > Display > Always-on screen in a Pixel Watch support thread.

What if your watch does not have this option?

If you cannot find an always-on display setting, use these privacy workarounds:

  • Temporarily disconnect Bluetooth between your phone and watch
  • Turn on Do Not Disturb before meetings or travel
  • Disable notifications from banking, email, and messaging apps
  • Turn off message previews
  • Use Theater Mode, Sleep Mode, or Battery Saver when appropriate
  • Lock your watch when you remove it
  • Keep your watch software updated

Best smartwatch privacy settings to review today

Take five minutes and check these settings:

  • Notification previews: Hide message contents until you tap
  • Sensitive apps: Disable wrist notifications for banking, email, and work chat
  • Lock settings: Require a passcode after removal
  • Two-factor alerts: Avoid showing codes on your wrist
  • Bluetooth: Disconnect temporarily in high-risk public spaces
  • Watch face complications: Remove calendar, location, health, or finance widgets
  • Lost device features: Turn on Find My or the equivalent tracking feature

Your smartwatch should help you, not broadcast your private life. Turn off always-on display, limit notification previews, and disconnect your watch from Bluetooth when needed. This small habit reduces public exposure without making your digital life harder.
