Consider upgrading your device if it’s no longer getting updates

Many smartphones, tablets and laptops are eventually abandoned by their manufacturers, at least when it comes to regular security and OS updates. If this happens to a device you rely on, consider switching it out for a newer or alternative version or one that is still receiving these critical patches and upgrades.

Lock your devices, like your tablet and smartphone

You lock the front door to your house, and you should do the same with your devices. Use strong passwords to lock your tablet and phone. Securing your devices keeps prying eyes out and can help protect your information in case your devices are lost or stolen.

Know all your mobile apps

Be sure to thoroughly review the details and specifications of an application before you download it. Be aware that the app may request that you share your personal information and permissions. Delete any apps that you are not using to increase your security.

Use your mobile network connection. Your own mobile network connection, also known as your wireless hotspot, is generally more secure than using a public wireless network. Use this feature if you have it included in your mobile plan.

Only connect your mobile device to the Internet if needed.

Disconnect your device from the Internet when you aren’t using it and make sure your device isn’t programmed to automatically connect to Wi-Fi. The likelihood that attackers will target you becomes much higher if your device is always connected.
